Williams Lake is about an hour south from where I live.

Health officials say 70 people were hospitalized after a chlorine incident at a public swimming pool in the B.C. Interior.

The Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex in Williams Lake, which houses a pool and hockey arena, was evacuated at about 8:20 a.m. PT Sunday.

Officials at Cariboo Memorial Hospital say 70 people were admitted to the emergency room, including 45 children.

Allison Ruault, the administrator at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital, said most of the children, who were in the pool warming up for a meet, were treated for minor irritations and have since been released from hospital.

"It's local irritations, so eyes, respiratory kinds of irritations some skin irritations, so we've been doing a lot of flushing of eyes and showering," Ruault said.

By Sunday afternoon, two people remained in hospital. Officials confirmed they were being treated for exposure to chlorine but would not release specific details.

City of Williams Lake spokesman Ken MacInnis said a hockey game and a swim meet were taking place at the time of the incident.

MacInnis says police, ambulance and fire officials attended the scene and investigators are looking into the cause of the incident.

Williams Lake is located about 300 kilometres north of Vancouver.
